Tapa’s Restaurant and Lanai Bar features three spaces for fun and entertainment including the Open Air Lanai Bar, the air conditioned Dance Room and Dining Area along with the “Front Porch” overlooking Seaside Avenue. Speaking specifically for Honolulu-which I think is the most fair comparison to places like New York that you mentioned-there are numerous gay bars and a host of pride events. Kalakaua Club featuring a saltwater infinity lounge pool with 3 areas, Parkview Sauna, Fitness Center and VIP lounge. More events are in the plans including a T-Dance and performances by Mister Sister. Tapa’s has also been recently featuring special events such as the recent JOCK party to celebrate the Hawaii Gay Kickball League and even the only benefit for World Aids Day in Waikiki featuring 7 of Hawaii’s top drag performers.

Each Friday from 10pm to 2am HEAT at Tapa’s Waikiki features Waikiki’s Top DJ’s Vaughn, Kuya and Emvee (Formerly From Fusion Waikiki), as well as, Male Gogo Dancers, Jello Shots and More. It would have been nice to know that the bar on the second floor of this hotel is known to the locals as the gay bar in Waikiki. Heat was created by Gay Island Guide and Vaughn-Music to give the local community a Waikiki alternative in nightlife for dancing, drinks and more. We did a LOT of walking as the hub of Waikiki was a mile away. Tapa’s is now home to HEAT – a weekly Friday night dance party that is open to anyone 21 and older. Instead, Ing shared that Tapa’s lease was recently renewed and the bar will undergo some cosmetic improvements over the next few weeks and months from internal painting and even some new furniture. Gay Island Guide has spoken with Tapa’s owner John Ing and have confirmed that the bar (that has been open for over twenty years and serving the local LGBT community) will not close. Since the story broke, many within the community have assumed that longtime LGBT restaurant and bar Tapa’s Waikiki would also be affected by these closures.
